How to Actually Choose Between Two Certifications (Not Just List Their Benefits)
October 14, 2026
Comparing certifications by reading their marketing pages rarely helps, because every certification body describes its own credential as globally respected and career-defining. Two questions cut through that faster than any feature comparison:
First: who is actually asking for this credential in the roles you want next? Not roles in general — the specific job postings you'd apply to in the next 18 months. Pull ten of them and see which certification appears, if any. If neither does, the decision is really about which body of knowledge is more useful to you, not which logo looks better on a resume.
Second: what does maintaining it cost you every year, not just to earn it once? Some certifications require ongoing continuing-education units and renewal fees indefinitely. If you're not confident you'll keep up with that requirement five years from now, a one-time credential without a renewal treadmill may serve you better even if it's slightly less prestigious.
Everything else — exam difficulty, study time, and prestige — matters less than most people assume once those two questions are answered honestly.
