In-Person vs. Remote Training: The Honest Trade-Offs

October 14, 2026

The debate over in-person versus remote training usually gets framed as a cost question, which misses what actually matters: what kind of change is the training trying to produce? Remote delivery works well when the goal is knowledge transfer — understanding a framework, learning a regulation, passing a certification exam. Learners can pause, rewatch, and go at their own pace, and the cost savings on travel and venue are real. In-person delivery earns its cost when the goal is behavior change under pressure — de-escalating an angry customer, running a safety drill, practicing a difficult performance conversation. These skills need real-time feedback and the discomfort of being observed, which a video call rarely replicates well. A practical rule we use when advising clients: if the skill can be assessed by a multiple-choice question, remote delivery is usually fine. If the skill can only be assessed by watching someone do it, budget for in-person — or at minimum, live video with small breakout groups rather than a one-way webinar.
